Friend (not sounding as happy as she should): You know, a lot of people seem to owe you favors.
Me: Well, I do something for them, they do something for me. That’s how it works.
Friend: That sounds a little . . . .
Me: It’s called networking.
Friend: I think the mafia has another name for it.
Today is my birthday! It’s one of those with a zero in it, and Jessica can’t quite believe how anyone could be that old, but I am mostly calm. You know what I would love for my birthday? I would love it if you’d sign up for my newsletter so we can keep up with each other.
