A personal Independence Day

In the U.S., today is Independence Day. I took the day off from work not because I wanted to celebrate the country (I’m actually quite alarmed at what is happening here) but because it is always a day where I reflect on my own Independence Day, which happened in a November more than twenty years ago when I filed for divorce.

There have been others: the day I stopped worrying about what my parents thought of my work, my life, and my daughter; and the day I gave up working for other people’s companies for good; and the day I shook the dust of Kansas off my shoes and moved to California.

I hope you have Independence Days, too, days that celebrate when you took a step to nurture who you are, to say, “I matter, too.”

Happy Independence Day to all of us.
